Kate Middleton’s Wedding Secret Was Leaked — And It Left Her ‘In Tears’ at the Palace
Kate and William on their wedding day

Planning a wedding is stressful for any couple — but when you’re preparing a royal ceremony watched by millions, the pressure is on an entirely different level.

Prince William and Kate Middleton had just four months to organise their 2011 wedding, and despite their best efforts to keep every detail under wraps, one of the most closely guarded secrets of the day was leaked: the identity of Kate’s wedding‑dress designer.

The dress leak that caused ‘tears at the Palace’

Kate had gone to great lengths to keep her chosen designer hidden. But weeks before the big day, news broke that Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen had been selected to create the gown.

The Sunday Times reported at the time that the dress would blend Kate’s ideas with Burton’s high‑fashion expertise.

According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, speaking in Channel 5’s Secrets of the Royal Dressmakers, the leak left Kate devastated:

“Behind the scenes I think that caused tears at the Palace because Kate had done everything she could to keep the wedding dress a secret.”

Burton denied involvement until Kate stepped out of the car at Westminster Abbey, confirming the rumours in spectacular fashion.

A gown that still gives people ‘butterflies’

Despite the leak, Kate’s dress became one of the most celebrated royal gowns in history.

The ivory creation featured:

- A satin bodice

- Hand‑cut Chantilly lace sleeves

- Lace appliqué of roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks

- A 2.7‑metre train

- A skirt designed to resemble a flower opening

- A veil embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework

Designer Caroline Castigliano said the moment Kate emerged from the car remained unforgettable:

“Everybody loved Kate’s dress… she looked sensational. Even now it gives me butterflies.”

A design rooted in tradition

Burton incorporated Carrickmacross lace, a technique dating back to the 1800s, as Kate’s “something old”. She was present at the Abbey on the day, ensuring every detail was perfect before Kate walked down the aisle.

Kate is said to have first noticed Burton’s work at the 2005 wedding of Tom Parker Bowles, where Burton designed the gown worn by Sara Buys.
