Woman Gets Beautiful Surprise After Spotting Dolphin at Welsh Beauty Spot
A woman enjoying a scenic walk along one of Wales’ most picturesque locations was treated to an unexpected sight after spotting a bottlenose dolphin swimming in the Menai Strait.
The dolphin appeared over the weekend near Church Island, a popular walking spot between Anglesey and Gwynedd. Bottlenose dolphins are relatively common around the UK coastline, but sightings tend to increase during the warmer months.
They can be identified by the unique nicks on their dorsal fins and are most often seen in areas such as Cardigan Bay, the Moray Firth in Scotland, and the coasts of Cornwall and Devon.
This latest sighting adds to several recent dolphin appearances off the north Wales coast. In March, skipper Barry Williams captured video footage of dolphins swimming alongside his fishing boat in Dulas Bay, Anglesey.
According to the Sea Watch Foundation, bottlenose dolphins are highly intelligent and social animals. They often travel in pods, swim in synchronised groups and are known for leaping clear of the water. The dolphins found around the British Isles are believed to be the largest of their kind in the world.
They are present around much of the UK coastline, including north Wales, although sightings vary depending on sea conditions and the time of year. The southern half of Cardigan Bay is considered an important summer feeding and breeding area, where dolphins nurture their young, socialise and rest.
In Wales, dolphins are most commonly spotted between April and November, particularly around New Quay and Mwnt.
