Simple Passport Trick Could Save You Money as Fees Set to Rise

With the cost of living still climbing this April — from council tax to stamps — passport fees are also due to increase, and many people don’t realise it. But MoneySavingExpert (MSE) has highlighted a simple way to cut the cost of renewing your passport before the price hike hits.

The tip? Take your own passport photo at home.  

Doing so could save you up to £13 per person, and even more if you’re renewing multiple passports in one go.

MSE, founded by Martin Lewis, says many people don’t know that the Passport Office now accepts self‑taken digital photos uploaded directly during an online application.

That means no need for:

- Photo booths  

- High‑street photography services  

- Extra charges for printed copies  

These typically cost between £5 and £13, so skipping them is an easy win.

However, MSE warns that 13.5% of applications are delayed because of photo issues, based on figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request — so getting it right matters.

How to take an acceptable passport photo at home

MSE recommends following these steps to avoid delays:

- Use a smartphone — no need for a professional camera  

- Make sure the photo is clear, in focus and in colour  

- Stand against a plain, light background  

- Include your head, shoulders and upper body  

- Ensure no shadows, objects or other people are in the frame  

- Don’t edit or filter the image — the system will crop it for you

When are passport prices rising?

According to the UK Government, passport fees will increase on 8 April 2026.

Who can get a passport for free?

British nationals born on or before 2 September 1929 can apply for or renew a passport free of charge. The Post Office’s Check and Send service is also free for this age group.

Fees still apply if:

- You need a passport urgently  

- You choose a frequent traveller passport (54 pages instead of 34)
