Helen Flanagan has revealed the emotional toll of her past relationship with former boxing champion David Haye, admitting she was left in tears as she addressed rumours she had been part of a “throuple” with the I’m A Celebrity star.

Haye, 45, is returning to screens for the new I’m A Celebrity… South Africa series, while Flanagan, 35, has spoken candidly about the complicated bond they once shared — and the pain that came with it.

‘I didn’t mean to fall in love with him, but I did’

The pair first met in the jungle back in 2012, but sparks didn’t fly until they reunited on the 2022 edition of the show. Their connection later became a talking point on Celebs Go Dating in September 2024, where Flanagan broke down while discussing their romance.

She told relationship experts:

“I’d known him for 10 years… I didn’t mean to fall in love with him, but I did. We had this amazing connection — we were like fire.”

But the actress admitted the relationship quickly became emotionally difficult, as Haye was in an open relationship at the time.

Helen: ‘I wouldn’t have enjoyed watching the man I loved with someone else’

Addressing the widely circulated rumours that she was part of a three‑way relationship, Flanagan firmly denied it:

“No, it wasn’t a throuple. I was in love with him. I wouldn’t have enjoyed watching the man I was in love with have sex with another woman — that’s not for me.”

She said she had communicated with Haye’s girlfriend but struggled with guilt and loneliness.

“I didn’t feel nice about it. It really upsets me because I don’t mean to hurt other people… I should’ve known better.”

The pair ended their fling in December 2023.

Haye returns to the jungle — and says the trials are tougher than ever

Speaking ahead of the launch of I’m A Celebrity… South Africa, Haye said he wanted a tougher challenge this time around — and producers delivered.

“The first time I did it, it felt easy. I was vocal about wanting more of a challenge — and they turned up the heat. Some of the stuff they got us to do, I wouldn’t have thought was legal.”

This year’s series is pre‑recorded and has been teased as the toughest edition yet, following the 2023 spin‑off won by Myleene Klass.

I’m A Celebrity… South Africa begins Monday, April 6 at 9pm on ITV1 and will also stream on ITVX.
