Rita Wilson Teases Mamma Mia 3
A third Mamma Mia! film may finally be edging closer, after franchise producer Rita Wilson hinted that discussions are underway — with Meryl Streep loudly backing the idea.
Speaking on The Claudia Winkleman Show on Friday, Rita — who served as executive producer on both the 2008 original and its 2018 sequel — teased that the beloved musical series could return.
Asked about Mamma Mia 3, she said:
“There will always be discussions but there is nothing definitively to announce,” before cheekily winking at the camera.
When pressed on whether she would consider directing, she added:
“I think I would direct if it was the right material.”
Meryl Streep: ‘Damn, yes!’
The tease follows Meryl Streep’s enthusiastic response on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she declared she would “Damn, yes!” return for a third film.
Amanda Seyfried: ‘Pretty sure it’s a done deal’
Back in late 2025, Amanda Seyfried also fuelled speculation, telling Entertainment Tonight:
“Maybe I should be coy… but I’m pretty sure Mamma Mia! 3 is a done deal. I’d love to see Sophie with her kids.”
Fans still obsessed with the films
Both Mamma Mia! films remain huge fan favourites on Netflix, with viewers calling the original:
- “The most rewatchable movie of all time”
- “Genuinely one of the greatest films ever made”
- “Talented. Brilliant. Incredible. Amazing…”
Even sceptics of the sequel admitted they were won over, with one IMDb reviewer saying:
“The film is really wonderful, even better than the first in a weird way.”
The Claudia Winkleman Show
The show returns Friday nights on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 10.30pm.
