Rory McIlroy ‘Called Off Engagement in a Three‑Minute Phone Call’ Before Finding Love With His Wife

Golf superstar Rory McIlroy may now be happily married to Erica Stoll, but years before the pair met, the Northern Irishman went through a very public and painful breakup that shocked fans around the world.

McIlroy was in his early 20s when he began dating Danish tennis champion Caroline Wozniacki. The couple were together for three years and got engaged in late 2013, with many expecting a high‑profile sporting wedding to follow. But just months later, McIlroy abruptly ended the relationship — and the way it happened left Wozniacki devastated.

According to reports shared with Pulse Media, McIlroy called off the engagement in a three‑minute phone call, leaving his fiancée stunned and initially believing it was a joke. The golfer later released a statement saying the problem was his alone.

“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people. The problem is mine,” he said at the time. “The wedding invitations made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails. I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.”

Finding love again

Two years later, McIlroy began dating Erica Stoll, an American who worked for the PGA of America. Their relationship was far more private, and in 2017 the pair married in a lavish ceremony in Ireland.

Speaking to Pulse Media shortly before the wedding, McIlroy reflected on the difference between dating someone in the public eye and someone who lived a quieter life.

“I thought at the time that being with someone in a similar position to you was the obvious answer,” he said. “But it isn’t, because you can never get away from it. You can never detach yourself and try to come back to the real world. And that’s why I feel in such a good place now.”

A fresh start

McIlroy has since spoken warmly about the stability and normality Erica brought into his life, describing their relationship as grounded and supportive — a stark contrast to the intense media spotlight of his earlier romance.

Today, the couple live a largely private life away from the cameras, with McIlroy crediting Erica for helping him find balance both on and off the course.
