Boss Makes Feelings Clear on Ethan Galbraith’s Best Position — and His Swansea Move
Galbraith has been hailed a "really intelligent footballer" by his national team boss

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has praised Ethan Galbraith’s development but insists the Swansea City man’s best position remains in midfield, despite his standout performances at right‑back this season.

Galbraith has become one of Swansea’s most reliable options at full‑back since December, but O’Neill says the 24‑year‑old’s long‑term future lies in the middle of the pitch.

O’Neill said Galbraith’s versatility comes from his intelligence on the ball:

“Versatility comes with two things — athleticism or being a really intelligent footballer. Ethan comes into the latter category.

His ability to retain the ball and his technical level is extremely high. For me, his best position is in midfield for our team.”

Swansea still see him as a midfielder

When Galbraith joined Swansea from Leyton Orient last summer, the internal expectation was that he would be used primarily as a midfielder who could cover at full‑back when needed. That view still largely stands, even though he has excelled in defence.

O’Neill added:

“We’ve played him deeper, we’ve played him higher as a 10. His versatility shows his football intelligence and what a top‑class player he can become.”

Why O’Neill believes Swansea was the right move

The Northern Ireland boss also praised Galbraith’s decision to join Swansea, saying he had other options but made the right call.

“I spoke to him in the summer. Relocating to Swansea wasn’t at the top of his list because he’d been in London and Manchester for most of his career. But I think he made a really good choice in the club he went to.”

O’Neill, who gave Galbraith his senior international debut at just 17, said the midfielder’s progression has taken time but believes there is still another level to come.

“The player we always knew is now coming through. I’ve known him since he was 15 or 16. It took him longer than we hoped, but I think there’s another step in Ethan. I thought he was terrific.”
