Money‑Saving Mum Shares How to Cut Costs at Easter
A money‑saving expert says parents can slash their Easter spending this year by swapping pricey shop‑bought items for simple homemade alternatives.
With Easter spending now topping £1.3 billion a year, rising prices and the ongoing cost‑of‑living squeeze are pushing families to look for cheaper ways to celebrate.
Lynn Beattie — known online as Mrs Mummypenny — says crafting decorations and treats at home can save a significant amount of money while doubling as fun activities for children.
The advice comes as some popular Easter eggs have risen by more than 40% per 100g, despite shrinking in size due to soaring cocoa costs.
‘Families still want Easter to feel special’
Lynn said many households are rethinking their traditions:
“Families still want to make Easter special, but there’s a shift towards doing more with less. Crafting, decorating and spending time together is replacing some of the more expensive habits.”
She recently created a full set of Easter decorations and crafts for around £50 using supplies from Temu — a saving of up to 87% compared to average seasonal spending.
Egg‑decorating kits, wreath‑making supplies and bonnet sets can all help recreate classic Easter activities at a fraction of the usual cost.
‘Children remember what you did, not what you spent’
Lynn added:
“Children don’t remember how much you spent — they remember what you did together. Simple things like painting eggs or making decorations are often what make the day special.”
