Weather maps show exact locations set to reach 30C during 'long' heatwave

Wales is set for another spell of hot weather this week, with temperatures expected to climb to 30C in some areas.

It comes after Wales experienced record-breaking heat at the end of June, when temperatures came close to 36C during an exceptional heatwave. Schools, attractions and businesses were forced to close at the time as a Met Office red extreme heat warning was issued.

Although conditions have been cooler over the past week, temperatures are now expected to rise again as another heatwave develops.

The Met Office says this latest spell is not expected to be as hot or humid as the June heatwave, but it could last longer and bring several days of very warm weather.

BBC Wales weather presenter Derek Brockway said another heatwave is on the way and warned that temperatures on Thursday and Friday could exceed 30C.

He said the warmest place in Wales on Saturday was Usk in Monmouthshire, where a high of 24.5C was recorded.

He added that next week will turn warmer, with another heatwave developing, though not as intense as the last one in June.

A heatwave is officially declared when temperatures meet or exceed a set threshold for three consecutive days.

Across much of Wales, that threshold is 25C. In parts of south-east Wales, including some areas near Monmouthshire, the threshold is slightly higher at 26C.

Monmouth is expected to be one of the hottest places in Wales, with highs of 28C forecast on Monday, July 6.

By Tuesday, July 7, Monmouth could meet the heatwave threshold, while other parts of Wales are expected to reach the criteria later in the week.

Temperatures are forecast to keep rising on Wednesday, July 8, with Cardiff, Newport, Abergavenny, Monmouth and Wrexham all expected to see highs above 25C.

By Thursday, July 9, Monmouth, Abergavenny and Hay-on-Wye could reach 30C.

Warm conditions are expected to continue on Friday, July 10, with high temperatures across much of Wales.

Cardiff and Newport could then reach 30C on Saturday, July 11, as the heat continues into the weekend.

The warm spell could last beyond next week, although forecasters say thunderstorms may become possible as the hot weather continues.
