Swansea man sentenced after Jeep stolen from city showroom

A Swansea man has been sentenced after a Jeep Wrangler was stolen from a car dealership during a late-night break-in.

Swansea Crown Court heard that James Dunne and another man forced their way into a fenced compound at the Bassett Citroen dealership on Swansea Enterprise Zone in the early hours of May 2 last year.

Prosecutor Caitlyn Jones said the pair walked around the yard before getting into a blue Jeep Wrangler, worth £36,995, and driving away.

The vehicle was found by police two months later, on July 7, partly hidden in bushes in a car park off St Teilo Street in Pontarddulais. It is believed the Jeep had been there for around two weeks before it was discovered.

Crime scene investigators examined the vehicle and recovered DNA from the gearstick. That DNA was later matched to 49-year-old Dunne.

Dunne was arrested on August 16 while walking along the M4 motorway at Llandarcy. He was taken to Swansea Central police station, where he gave “no comment” answers during interview.

The court was told that the keys to the Jeep were later found when another man was arrested in connection with unrelated matters and his home was searched. That man also gave “no comment” answers in interview, but he was not charged due to a lack of forensic evidence linking him to the theft.

The dealership made a successful insurance claim following the theft. The insurance company later sought £11,360 in compensation from Dunne.

Dunne, of Llanerch Road, Bonymaen, Swansea, had previously admitted theft and appeared in court to be sentenced.

The court heard he has 32 previous convictions for 175 offences, including robbery, taking a vehicle without consent, and numerous theft-related matters. His most recent theft conviction before this case was in 2005. In 2024, he was fined under the Vagrancy Act after being found in an enclosed area at Swansea’s SA1 development for an unlawful purpose.

Defending, Megan Williams said Dunne’s offending history showed periods where he had been able to live a law-abiding life. She said his mental health declined following the death of his brother around eight years ago, and that the breakdown of a 29-year relationship later led to a relapse into cocaine and alcohol misuse.

Ms Williams said Dunne was now taking positive steps to deal with his problems and asked the court to accept there was a realistic prospect of rehabilitation.

Judge Catherine Richards said the theft involved a “degree of sophistication” and that the Jeep appeared to have been specifically targeted.

However, the judge said that, given the progress Dunne was making, an immediate prison sentence would have a disproportionate impact.

Dunne was sentenced to 14 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, after receiving a one-third discount for his guilty plea. He was also ordered to complete a rehabilitation programme and a 12-month drug rehabilitation requirement.

The judge also ordered him to pay £500 compensation towards the loss suffered by the insurance company.
