Wales international gives powerful testimony after seeing Welsh region axed
Former Wales international Sonny Parker has made a passionate address to fans after the future of his former club Ospreys was plunged into uncertainty.
Last week saw the Welsh Rugby Union chose Ospreys owners Y11 as their preferred bidder for Cardiff. That means that the future of the Ospreys is now unclear beyond the end of next season, with the WRU planning on reducing the number of teams from four to three.
A number of former Ospreys players - including Shane Williams, James Hook, Gavin Henson and Alun Wyn Jones - have offered to meet with WRU bosses amid fears for the club's future.
One former Ospreys has gone even further, with Parker passionately explaining about the potential loss of the Ospreys.
The 31-cap centre was part of the Celtic Warriors and London Welsh when both clubs ceased to exist, so the 48-year-old is well-versed in the uncertainty currently affecting the Ospreys' players and staff.
And, in his powerful testimony, he outlines the human cost that will come with any decision to cull a professional team in Wales.
"To my fellow Ospreys, current players, staff, and the wider Welsh rugby family," wrote Parker on Facebook.
"Reading this statement hits home with immense force. As someone who has worn this jersey, my heart goes out to the current squad and staff at Llandarcy. But I speak not just as a former Osprey, but as someone who has lived through the darkest days of our sport.
"I have seen the end of the road at the Celtic Warriors and London Welsh. I have stood in those rooms when the doors were locked and the future was stripped away. I know first-hand that when we talk about "regions" or "restructuring," we aren't just talking about rugby clubs; we are talking about people.
"Behind every player and staff member is a family. There are mortgages to pay, children to support, and lives to build. When the WRU and Y11 operate without transparency, they aren't just managing a business—they are gambling with people's wellbeing. The mental toll of not knowing if you’ll have a job next month is a weight no professional should have to carry while trying to perform at the highest level.
"The Ospreys region deserves more than vague statements and shifting goalposts. We need:
"Total Transparency: A clear, honest picture of the roadmap ahead.
"Accountability: Recognition from the WRU and Y11 of the stress this is causing.
"Wellbeing Support: Guaranteed protection and support for the people who make this club what it is.
"The "Our Blood is Black" sentiment is more than a slogan; it’s a bond. We cannot allow Welsh rugby to fall into a downward spiral by repeating the mistakes of the past. Cutting teams and leaving staff in the dark is not a strategy—it’s a failure of leadership.
"To the current players and staff: We see you, we support you, and we will continue to fight for the respect and clarity you deserve.
"Once an Osprey, always an Osprey."
Parker spent eight years with the Ospreys, joining the club in 2004 after the demise of the Celtic Warriors.
He stayed there until 2012, before joining London Welsh - going on to be an assistant coach when the club went into liquidation in 2016.
