UK drivers warned over little-known MOT rule after car fails for tiny windscreen sticker
An MOT is an annual requirement for cars over three years old

UK motorists are being urged to double-check their windscreens ahead of an MOT after one driver claimed their car failed over something as small as a sticker.

The incident, shared online, quickly sparked debate after the driver said the sticker — positioned behind the rear-view mirror and barely visible — was enough to result in an instant failure.

But while it may sound harsh, experts say the tester was simply following the rules.

Under current MOT regulations, visibility through the windscreen is a key safety check. The area covered by the wipers is divided into zones, and anything that obstructs the driver’s view — including stickers, permits, dashcams or phone holders — can lead to a fail if it’s deemed too large or poorly positioned.

In this case, the sticker was located within the wiper-swept area. After removing it in the test centre car park, the vehicle was reportedly reassessed and passed shortly afterwards.

Motoring experts say it’s a rule that often catches drivers off guard.

A spokesperson for Indigo Car Hire said many motorists wrongly assume small items on the windscreen won’t matter, particularly if they’re out of direct sight behind the mirror.

However, MOT testers are required to apply strict visibility guidelines, and anything considered an obstruction — no matter how minor it seems — must be marked as a failure.

The sticker incident highlights just how easily drivers can be tripped up on test day.

Other common but unexpected MOT failures include empty windscreen washer bottles, which must be able to clean the glass effectively, as well as illuminated dashboard warning lights such as engine, ABS or airbag alerts — all of which can trigger an automatic fail.

While many of these issues are quick fixes, they continue to catch out thousands of motorists every year.

With more than 30 million MOT tests carried out annually across the UK, drivers are being reminded that even the smallest detail could be the difference between a pass and an unexpected trip back to the garage.
