Mysterious humming noise plaguing residents for the last 12 months may be located
Investigations have reopened into a mysterious ‘humming noise’ echoing across parts of Newport.
The ‘humming noise’ has been reported as far afield as Lliswerry, Somerton, Beechwood, Moorland Park, and Llanwern and is described as a ‘low whine.’
Previously Newport City Council confirmed that environmental health and community safety officers carried out extensive monitoring between November 2025 and January 2026. This followed repeated reports from residents in east Newport.
Initially closed on February 7, the case has now been reopened, and the mysterious hum is under investigation once again.
Councillors have now confirmed that a resident claims to have pinpointed the cause of the noise and that environmental health is looking into the matter again.
Speaking about the strange frequency, Lliswerry Councillor Andrew Sterry said: “So basically, I’ve been running with this a year. Lots of residents Lliswerry, Ringland, Beechwood, Llanwern, all on the east side have contacted me about hearing this humming noise at different times of the day.
“I contacted the Environmental Health service, and we’ve spent the last 12 months trying to pinpoint what it was. They thought it was the railway line or electric generator boxes, so I put an update saying they’ve made enquiries, but it wasn’t that so no luck.”
Councillor Sterry continued: “Now I’ve had a resident who contacted me saying they’ve pinpointed where the humming noise is coming from, and I’ve asked them to reopen the case. People are having restless nights, and they are constantly hearing this noise.”
“Around 40–50 residents have contacted me about this. It does seem to appear all along the railway line, but it’s not that.”
The location of the noise is yet to be disclosed in case the investigation doesn’t lead to a definite conclusion.
