Mum Left Furious After Hairdresser’s Backhanded Comments About Her Baby
The mum was emotional after her visit to the hairdressers

A new mum has spoken of her frustration after a routine haircut turned sour when her hairdresser made a series of personal and backhanded remarks about her baby and family life.

The woman, mum to a 13‑month‑old, said she had been looking forward to a rare moment of peace — a chance to relax, unwind and enjoy a quiet cup of tea away from the demands of parenting. But instead, she left the salon feeling judged and unsettled.

Sharing her experience on the r/UKParenting forum on Reddit, she explained that the conversation began as harmless small talk before quickly becoming uncomfortably personal.

“It felt like she was judging my entire life”

The mum said the hairdresser asked how she managed financially after losing her job late in pregnancy. When she explained that she and her partner shared their finances, the stylist replied:

“Oh yeah, people have husbands,”

in a tone the mum described as implying she was taking advantage of her partner.

The hairdresser then added that she would “never plan to have a baby in today’s world” because things were “deteriorating globally”.

The mum said the comments hit harder because she has already faced criticism from others — including people from her home country questioning why she didn’t have children sooner.

“I feel judged no matter what I do,” she wrote.

“Motherhood, career uncertainty, life changes… these comments just add emotional weight I don’t need.”

Parents rush to support her

Hundreds of parents responded with messages of solidarity, many saying they had faced similar judgement.

One wrote:

“People will always share unsolicited advice and inappropriate opinions. As a mum, you can’t get it right no matter what you do. I learned to say things like ‘OK’ or ‘That’s an odd thing to say’ — it shuts it down.”

Another said:

“You’ll be judged until the day you die. Social media makes it worse. It took me months to find a group of mums who weren’t insanely judgemental.”

A third added:

“There are so many backhanded comments. That’s why we should all try to build each other up instead of tearing each other down.”
