Huw Edwards Issues New Statement and Says He Plans to Challenge Claims
Huw Edwards has announced his intention to 'challenge the misleading or fabricated claims' featured in recent coverage, stating he will 'produce my own account'.

Disgraced former BBC presenter Huw Edwards has issued a fresh statement saying he intends to challenge what he describes as “misleading or fabricated claims” made about him in recent coverage.

Edwards, once one of the BBC’s highest‑paid and most recognisable newsreaders, fronted News at Ten for decades before pleading guilty in July 2024 to making indecent images of children. He received a six‑month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

His downfall was recently dramatised in a Channel 5 series starring Doc Martin actor Martin Clunes — a portrayal Edwards has strongly criticised.

‘I will challenge the misleading or fabricated claims’

In a statement released on Thursday, Edwards said:

“Much has been written and reported in the past week following Channel 5’s one‑sided account.

Other opportunities will arise later this year for me to state my case and to challenge the misleading or fabricated claims made in recent coverage.”

He added that “serious questions” remained unanswered and said he would not comment further until he produces his own account — believed to be a documentary or podcast.

Criticism of Channel 5 drama

Edwards previously accused the production company behind the Channel 5 drama, Wonderhood Studios, of failing to verify the “truth” of the narrative portrayed in the series. The programme revisited allegations first reported by The Sun in July 2023, claiming a “top BBC star” paid a teenager more than £35,000 for sexual images.

Channel 5 defended the drama, saying:

“Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards is based on extensive interviews with the victim, his family, the journalists who revealed his story, text exchanges between the victim and Edwards, and court reporting.

All allegations made in the film were put to Huw Edwards via his solicitors six weeks before transmission.”

‘Reckless, shameful and damaging’

Edwards has previously expressed “deep regret and remorse” for his offences, admitting his behaviour was “reckless, shameful and damaging”.
