Hundreds sign petition against ‘shocking’ closure of Ammanford nursery school
HUNDREDS of locals have signed an online petition opposing the ‘shocking’ closure of Ammanford Nursery School.
Carmarthenshire County Council confirmed statutory notice would be issued on Tuesday, February 10 to discontinue the nursery, so the minimum age of children at Ysgol Bro Banw and Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman can change from 4-11 to 3-11.
Following backlash from Cllr Kevin Madge who labelled the development ‘unfair for families’ and residents in Ammanford expressing concern for parents, the petition has 363 verified signatures at the time of writing.
The petition reads: “Having four of my five children attend Ammanford Nursery School has been an incredible experience for our family and community.
“This nursery is more than just a school—it has been a foundation for early education and support for countless families in our area.
“With its welcoming environment and dedicated staff, Ammanford Nursery School has played a pivotal role in shaping the formative years of our children.
“The recent announcement that the school will first be reduced to part-time provision and ultimately closed entirely next year is shocking and heartbreaking.”
The nursery offers vital services to the community, providing a safe, nurturing, and educational space for young children.
The petition continues: “How can Carmarthenshire County Council consider shutting down such a beloved institution? The exceptional achievements and unwavering commitment of the school's educators speak volumes about its impact.
“Its closure would create a void that no other facility could easily fill. The decision to close this treasured school feels not only disruptive but also detrimental to the welfare of our communities and future generations.”
The petition was organised by Cordelia McAvoy who has been worried about the closure of Ammanford Nursery School for several months and wrote a letter to Carmarthenshire County Council relaying her disappointment.
“Statistically, access to quality early childhood education is crucial for cognitive development and social skills.
“According to research by the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, children who attend preschools exhibit better preparation for elementary education, showing advanced reading and math skills as compared to those who do not. Therefore, it's crucial to maintain, not diminish, this access for families in Ammanford.
“We urge Carmarthenshire County Council to reconsider this decision. Instead of shutting down Ammanford Nursery School, let's explore ways to enhance and promote its services. Increasing public awareness, securing grants, and looking for private partnerships could ensure its longevity and continued contribution to our community.”
