Huge scale of entire new Welsh community built from nothing on an old steelworks site

A new community has taken shape after the demolition of one of Wales' most famous steelworks over 20-years-ago. The site of the former Newport Llanwern Steelworks has been transformed with over 1000 homes, a primary school and a business park.

Work has not finished at the Glan Llyn project with around 3000 more homes are yet to be developed as well as another primary school and a railway station. For over four decades the 600 acre site was home to one of the UK's biggest steel works sites, Llanwern Steelworks from 1962 until it was closed down in 2001.

The closure of the site was controversial as the cease in operation meant that 1,3000 jobs were lost. In 2004 the suite was nothing but rubble as the blast furnaces were demolished.

Over 20 years later, a community thrives on what was once a vacant brownfield site following the closure and demolition of the steelworks.

The £1bn redevelopment plan of the site is expected to be complete by spring 2028 eventually including 4,000 homes, schools, a police station, pub/restaurant, supermarket, and community centre as well as open spaces, new lakes, new access roads, a GP surgery, and health and leisure facilities.

So far 1,330 homes, district centre, Glan Llyn Primary School, and the west lake have been constructed along with a number of employment units on the business park, including Amazon.
