Bomb Squad Called to Popular Beach After ‘Explosive Device’ Found
A popular UK beach has been closed after a suspected explosive device was discovered, prompting officials to warn the public to avoid the area.
The item was found on Lyme Regis beach in Dorset on Tuesday afternoon, with HM Coastguard confirming it was alerted at around 1pm. Dorset Police and a specialist bomb disposal team were also called to the scene.
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said:
“A report of suspected ordnance at Lyme Regis beach was made at about 1.05pm. Coastguard Rescue Teams from Lyme Regis and West Bay are attending, as well as Dorset Police. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team has been sent.”
Beach closed as precaution
Lyme Regis Town Council confirmed that part of the beach had been cordoned off:
“A section of the beach is currently closed following guidance from HM Coastguard. There is no immediate cause for concern, however we kindly ask members of the public to avoid the area while this is being managed.”
Police said they were assisting with the cordon but that the coastguard was leading the incident.
Not the first scare in the area
Lyme Regis is a hugely popular seaside destination, attracting more than 20,000 visitors during peak season. It has seen similar alerts before.
In March last year, a suspected bomb discovered on nearby Charmouth beach triggered a major emergency response — only for experts to later confirm it was a “very old straight‑sided saucepan”.
Coastguard teams say ordnance washing up on the coastline is not uncommon and urged the public to report anything suspicious.
“If there is any doubt, please call 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
