Martin Lewis, the founder of Money Saving Expert (MSE) warned peole to be careful. On X, formerly Twitter, the expert wrote do "not trust". This is what you need to know:
- Money Saving Expert founder, Martin Lewis, issued a severe public warning on social media about a sophisticated, new telephone scam. He explicitly told the public to "not trust" specific people who may call them claiming to represent his endorsements.
- The scam firm is dishonestly alleging that Martin Lewis has encouraged people to engage with their specific offer for grants related to renewable energy projects. Lewis reacted strongly to this, stating the claim is "UTTER B**S" and advising consumers to politely hang up the phone immediately.
- This call is just part of a wider issue where scammers use Martin Lewis' recognisable face or name in various advertisements, such as for cryptocurrency, investments, or bank schemes. The money expert maintains a long-standing policy: neither he nor Money Saving Expert has ever endorsed any financial products or services.
- If you have already responded to one of these scams, you should stop all further communication with the fraudsters immediately. The next step is to call your bank directly to cancel or block any outstanding or recurring payments you may have authorised.
- Victims can use the 159 hotline to connect quickly and safely with the fraud department of almost all major UK banks. Scams must also be reported to the relevant UK authorities: in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, you should contact Action Fraud, and in Scotland, you should report it via Advice Direct Scotland or to Police Scotland on 101.
