Prime Minister Keir Starmer announces cost of living action as prices soar
Sir Keir Starmer has said he will continue to act in the “British national interest” amid questions about international security and the future of NATO.
Speaking after Donald Trump suggested he was considering pulling the United States out of the alliance, Starmer said:
“Nato is the single most effective military alliance the world has ever seen, and it has kept us safe for many decades. We are fully committed to Nato.”
He added that “whatever the pressure on me and others, whatever the noise”, his decisions would be guided by the national interest.
Starmer reiterated that the UK would not be drawn directly into the current conflict, saying:
“This is not our war and we’re not going to get dragged into it.”
Calls for closer European cooperation
The Labour leader said defence, security and economic stability required closer ties with Europe, pointing to last year’s summit and confirming another would take place this year.
He said the upcoming meeting would:
- Build on equipment and agreements put in place last year
- Go further on alignment with European partners
Starmer framed the approach as part of a long‑term strategy to strengthen the UK’s security and economic resilience.
