Severe winter weather has brought much of the Welsh rail network to a standstill

Trains across Wales will be cancelled or delayed on Thursday, January 8

Train passengers across Wales are facing widespread disruption today after Transport for Wales closed multiple rail lines due to heavy snow, sleet and severe weather after Storm Goretti, leaving large sections of the network completely without services until at least the end of the day. Here's everything we know so far:

  • On Friday 9th January, no trains will be able to operate on the following routes:
  • Llandudno Junction to Llandudno - suspended.
  • Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog - suspended.
  • Wrexham to Bidston - suspended.
  • Craven Arms to Swansea service (via Heart of Wales Line) - suspended.
  • Services West of Carmarthen - suspended.
  • Maesteg to Ebbw services - suspended.
  • Hereford to Shrewsbury services - suspended.
  • Shrewsbury to Birmingham International - suspended.
  • Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth - suspended.
  • A reduced timetable will be introduced, with the following services operating:
  • 1 train per hour (tph) Carmarthen - Cardiff Central.
  • 1 train every two hours on the Shrewsbury to Crewe local service.
  • 1 tph Cardiff Central - Gloucester.
  • 1 tph Chester – Manchester.
  • Due to poor driving conditions and closures on local roads, no replacement road transport will be provided. Local bus services are also affected. Please check your journey before travelling.
  • All trains between Swansea and Shrewsbury have been cancelled, with TfW confirming the railway is closed and warning passengers not to travel, as no rail replacement buses are able to run because of hazardous road conditions.
  • The disruption has spread across mid and north Wales, with lines between Shrewsbury and Hereford, Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth, Wrexham and Shrewsbury, and Shrewsbury and Birmingham all affected by snow, fallen trees and damaged points, leading to full closures or severe delays of up to 60 minutes.
  • Services are also suspended between Chester and Liverpool Lime Street, Wrexham Central and Bidston, and across the Conwy Valley line between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog, where heavy snowfall has forced the closure of the railway.
  • In south and west Wales, no trains are running between Carmarthen and Fishguard Harbour, Milford Haven or Pembroke Dock, while services between Maesteg and Ebbw Vale Town are also cancelled due to worsening weather conditions.
  • The Heart of Wales line between Llanelli and Shrewsbury has been shut since mid-afternoon on Thursday, with Network Rail citing forecast heavy snow and poor road access as reasons replacement buses cannot operate.
  • Further disruption is reported on the Cambrian Coast line between Machynlleth and Pwllheli, which remains closed, along with ongoing cancellations between Cardiff Central and Carmarthen where delays and overcrowding are expected.
  • Transport for Wales has confirmed tickets will be accepted at no extra cost on alternative routes, including West Midlands Railway, CrossCountry and Avanti West Coast services where available, and passengers may use tickets on alternative travel dates up to and including Monday, January 12.
  • Passengers are being urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, check live updates before setting off, and prepare for ongoing disruption as severe winter weather continues to impact Wales’ transport network.
