Former Primary School to Be Demolished and Replaced With New Homes
Plans to build up to 14 new homes on the site of a former Pembrokeshire primary school have been approved.
Pembrokeshire Council, through agent Asbri Planning Ltd, submitted an outline application to redevelop the former Hakin Infants School on Picton Road, Hakin, Milford Haven. Councillors have now given the scheme the green light, subject to a detailed list of conditions.
School site to be cleared for redevelopment
The school closed several years ago and has since fallen into disrepair. Last April, planners approved a separate application to demolish the buildings, create an ecological enhancement area and construct a dedicated bat house.
A supporting statement at the time described the site as boarded up, with overgrown gardens and play areas. Hakin Infants was one of three local schools to close in the past decade, alongside Hubberston VC School and Hakin Junior School — both already demolished.
Up to 14 homes planned
The outline proposal includes:
- 4 one‑bedroom flats
- 6 two‑bedroom houses
- 4 three‑bedroom houses
The development would also incorporate:
- Green infrastructure
- Open spaces
- Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS)
The council says the aim is to create a well‑connected, attractive residential area that reflects the character of Milford Haven while making productive use of a redundant site.
“High‑quality, sustainable homes”
A planning statement said the project offers an opportunity to deliver high‑quality, well‑designed homes that meet modern living standards while respecting the surrounding environment.
The development is intended to support local housing needs while also attracting new residents to the area.
Approval granted with conditions
Milford Haven Town Council backed the application, and county planners have now approved it subject to a number of conditions that will need to be met before construction can begin.
