England star fights back tears as red card incident sparks touchline brawl

England defender Jarrell Quansah was left visibly emotional after being shown a straight red card during England’s World Cup match against Mexico.

The Three Lions had gone into half-time with a 2-1 lead in Mexico City after Jude Bellingham scored twice in quick succession.

Mexico pulled one back before the break through Julián Quiñones, setting up a tense second half.

But England were reduced to 10 men shortly after the restart when Quansah was dismissed in the 54th minute for a challenge on Jesus Gallardo.

The Bayer Leverkusen defender appeared to make contact with the ball, but his foot was high and his studs caught Gallardo’s leg.

The tackle sparked angry scenes on the Mexico bench, with players and staff rushing out of the dugout to protest.

Referee Alireza Faghani initially allowed play to continue, but the incident was later reviewed by VAR.

After checking the pitchside monitor, the referee returned to the field and showed Quansah a straight red card.

Quansah appeared to argue his case but looked devastated as he walked off the pitch.

Several England teammates, including Jordan Henderson and Dean Henderson, were seen comforting him as he left the field.

The red card forced England boss Thomas Tuchel into a tactical change, with Bukayo Saka taken off so John Stones could come on in defence.

Despite going down to 10 men, England extended their lead when captain Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot after Anthony Gordon was brought down.

Mexico responded with a penalty of their own, with Raul Jimenez beating Jordan Pickford from the spot to keep the game alive.
