Barry Island packed as Wales heatwave continues into new week

Barry Island was packed with visitors as people headed to the coast to enjoy the sunshine during the latest Welsh heatwave.

Cars and coaches arrived at the famous seaside spot throughout the day, with families and day-trippers making the most of the hot July weather.

Temperatures in Barry reached around 31C on Saturday afternoon, with many people heading to the beach for a swim, an ice cream and some time by the sea.

However, anyone hoping for a cooler sea breeze may have been disappointed, with conditions still feeling extremely hot along the coast.

The Met Office says the high temperatures are expected to continue into the coming week.

Parts of South Wales, including Cardiff, Swansea and Newport, are forecast to see temperatures around 30C on Sunday afternoon, with the heat expected to remain into the evening.

Mid, west and north Wales are expected to be slightly cooler, although temperatures are still likely to remain in the high 20s.

Forecast maps show temperatures across Wales are expected to stay in the mid to high 20s from Monday through to Thursday.

The Met Office forecast for Wales says any overnight mist and low cloud on Monday should clear quickly, leaving a dry, sunny and breezy day.

It will feel very warm again as the heatwave continues, with maximum temperatures of around 30C.

From Tuesday to Thursday, conditions are expected to remain largely dry, settled and very warm.

There is also a small chance of a few thunderstorms developing by Wednesday.

People heading out in the heat are being reminded to stay hydrated, use sun protection and avoid the strongest sunshine during the hottest part of the day.

Beachgoers are also urged to take care in the water, keep an eye on children and check local safety advice before swimming.
