Health warning issued to anyone who takes blood pressure tablets
Thousands of people rely on medication to manage their blood pressure, but there's crucial information you need to know if you're among them. A pharmacist has issued advice to anyone currently in this situation, highlighting vital health knowledge you should be aware of.
Pharmacist Anum, who regularly shares expert guidance with her followers, has provided essential advice for those dealing with high blood pressure. Whilst it's critical to take any medication prescribed to you, there are also important guidelines to follow to ensure it's being used properly, as there are circumstances where your blood pressure could be at risk of dropping too low.
This isn't the only warning of its kind to emerge recently. Previously, experts released some particularly important guidance.
In a video, Pharmacist Anum explained: "Do you actually need to be taking your blood pressure tablets for life? I guess, for lots of people, the answer is kind of yes.
"You will be taking blood pressure tablets long-term, or for at least as long as you need them. What I mean by this is sometimes lifestyle changes can actually impact your blood pressure, and cause your blood pressure to drop.
"So this can include things like losing weight, lowering your salt intake, exercising more frequently, managing your stress. All of these things can help to lower your blood pressure naturally.
"Now, if you are [making] these lifestyle changes and taking blood pressure tablets, we may fall into the situation where actually your blood pressure starts dropping too low. In this case, only under medical supervision, it may be advised that you lower your blood pressure tablets or stop them.
"So, you may not necessarily need to be using them for life but, as I say, for most people it will have to be long-term. Never just stop your blood pressure tablets withing speaking to your GP or your pharmacist first.
"I guess this video highlights the importance of having those regular reviews. So, if there are any changes in your medical condition, then this can be picked up, and your medication can be changed appropriately."
It's extremely important advice to follow, as sometimes our bodies change and medication needs to be adjusted to accommodate this. Whilst it's essential to take medication you've been prescribed, implementing other lifestyle changes can affect how it works.
What to know about blood pressure medication
You may not be aware that there are instances where blood pressure medication can cause your blood pressure to drop too low, which is otherwise known as hypotension. This can occur if the dose is too high, the medication has changed, or if it's used in combination with dehydration or other substances.
Lifestyle modifications aimed at improving your health could also play a role, as Pharmacist Anum pointed out. Typical signs include dizziness, light-headedness and fainting, especially when getting up quickly.
If symptoms are serious, it's crucial to sit or lie down straight away to avoid falls. However, you must never discontinue the medication without speaking to a doctor, as the dosage may require adjustment.
Older people face a particularly heightened risk of blood pressure drops and falls. If you experience light-headedness, monitoring your blood pressure and informing your GP is important.
Additionally, you should contact them if you're concerned about any possible medication side effects. Always seek their advice regarding any health worries.
