Parents issued fresh warning as Nestle extends recall of baby formula due to toxin
Nestle has apologised to its customers and stated that the issue originated from an ingredient supplied by a leading supplier

Several SMA Infant Forumla and Follow-On Formula products have been recalled because of the presence of cereulide.

Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. Cereulide is highly heat stable meaning it is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, using boiling water or when making the infant milk. If consumed it can lead to rapid onset of symptoms.

Symptoms caused by this toxin include nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

These are all the Nestle products affected by the recall and their batch codes:

A spokesman for the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said: “Nestlé is recalling the above products. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products.

“These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products.

“If you have bought any of the above products do not feed it to babies. Instead, share a photo of the product and the batch code via https://www.nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch or call the careline on 0800 0 81 81 80 for a refund.

“Nestlé have also added a tool to their website that will help to identify if a batch is or not under the scope of the recall. You can access this at https://www.smababy.co.uk/product-recall.

“If you have fed this product to a baby and have any concerns about potential health impact, you should seek advice from healthcare professionals, using the most appropriate route depending on where you live, (i.e., visit your GP, call NHS111).

“Even if you have not identified ill-health in your baby as a result of consumption of this product, it is essential to stop using it.

“If the infant formula or follow-on formula was prescribed by a health professional for your infant, consult a pharmacist or other medical professional before changing formula.”

A Nestle spokesman added: “There have been no confirmed reports of any illness associated with consumption of the products concerned.

“Nevertheless, out of an abundance of caution, Nestle has decided to perform this voluntary product recall in line with our strict product quality and safety protocols.

“All other Nestle products and other batches of the same product that are not in the scope of this voluntary recall are safe to consume.

“We understand that this news may cause concern for parents, and we sincerely apologise for any concern or inconvenience caused to parents, caregivers, and customers.”
