Girl feared for her life as man waved knife in town centre
Kyle Jones being detained on the floor by police in dashcam footage

This is the moment a man who threatened youngsters with a knife in Colwyn Bay was apprehended by officers. Bodycam footage captured police officers restraining Kyle Jones on the ground as they arrested and handcuffed him.

Jones, 23, of no fixed abode, was with another man in the Abergele Road area of Colwyn Bay on the evening of February 17, a court heard.

Council CCTV operators requested police officers attend Station Road where they had spotted the two men who appeared to be in possession of a knife.

The pair were detained, with witnesses describing how Jones had been waving the knife about, making threats towards the youngsters. Firearms officers were also called and the two were detained following a struggle.

The court heard Jones approached the group and, after an exchange, pursued them to Station Road whilst brandishing the weapon,

Most of the youngsters managed to take shelter inside a shop but one girl was trapped outside. She said she feared for her life as Jones waved the knife, shouting: "I will show you who I am."

The ordeal continued near the Prince Madoc pub before officers arrived and detained both men following a struggle. Even whilst being restrained Jones continued to shout threats.

Judge Timothy Petts noted Jones' "bad track record" and a persistent pattern of carrying knives. The Probation Service deemed him a high risk to the public and there was nothing they could do to contain his risk in the community.

As a result, the judge determined that a custodial sentence was the only suitable punishment for such menacing behaviour.

Jones confessed to threatening an individual with a bladed object in a public area. On Friday at Caernarfon Crown Court, Judge Timothy Petts sentenced him to 20 months in prison.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: "We will continue to relentlessly pursue those who threaten the safety of our community."
